Location
Big Water is located near Lake Powell, on highway 89, in Southern Utah. The town is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. North of Big Water is the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and to the east is Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Big Water is about 60 miles from Kanab, UT, 6 miles from the northern border of Arizona and about 20 miles from Page, AZ. We are also only a few hours drive from the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and Monument Valley.
History
The Town of Big Water was incorporated on July 1, 1984. Before that the community was called Glen Canyon City. Settlement of this area began in the late 1950’s, during the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam.
According to the 2000 US Census the population of the town is 417.
School Information
The Big Water School, located on Aaron Burr in Big Water, teaches all grades, K-12. The school serves the communities of Big Water and Church Wells. There are currently 55 students enrolled at the Big Water School.
Highlights
Every Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m AZ / 7:00 p.m. UT. there is a community pot luck dinner at the Big Water Town Hall. Each week has a different theme for the food, such as Italian, Oriental, Mexican, Southern, etc. Everybody is welcome to attend. If you choose not to bring food, you can donate $3. per person, which is used to purchase plates, cups, napkins, etc.
